Dr. James Burhop earned his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin Madison Medical School in 1986. He completed his internship at Mayo Graduate School, Rochester, Minnesota and then a residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Dr. Burhop, board certified in General Surgery, and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  He is also an active member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery.

Dr. Burhop has been in practice since 1992 and joined Brookfield Surgical Associations (an affiliate of the Bariatric Institute of Wisconsin) in 2000. He has had extensive training in laparoscopic surgical techniques and performs most intra-abdominal operations, including bariatric surgical procedures, laparoscopically. These techniques are minimally-invasive, requiring only small incisions and therefore allow for a faster recovery, quicker return to normal activities and fewer complications. Dr. Burhop was one of Wisconsin’s first surgeons to perform laparoscopic bariatric surgery; both the LAP-BAND® and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedures are performed using this minimally invasive technique. He has helped hundreds of patients achieve a slimmer life through bariatric surgery.

Dr. Burhop is a native of Wisconsin and enjoys all outdoor activities our state has to offer, especially hunting, fishing and motorcycle riding. He enjoys these activities and his wife and four children. Dr. Burhop is an active member of his church and multiple local, state and national surgical organizations.
