Before Weight Loss Surgery:
400 lbs.

After Weight Loss Surgery:
200 lbs.

I didn’t have any real medical reason for gaining so much weight, it was a simple matter of over-eating. Sweets were my downfall. I was a husky kid, but when I was 16 I worked at a fast food restaurant. From then on I started to balloon up.

As my weight grew my physical and emotional health deteriorated. I was discharged from the Navy because of my increasing weight. My joints ached all the time. I developed high blood pressure, severe GERD, sleep apnea and more. My kids and my wife would get on my nerves and I was grouchy and depressed. I took medicine to try to control the elevated blood pressure, to handle the GERD, to sleep, and for depression, and I wasn’t even 30 yet. The future didn’t look good for me or for my family.

My wife watched a television program about gastric bypass surgery and I discussed it with my family doctor. He suggested I explore that option and recommended Dr. James Burhop and the program at the Bariatric Institute of Wisconsin. My boss knew someone who had the surgery and introduced me to that patient as well. I went to a BIW seminar and also had a private appointment with Dr. Burhop and the surgical coordinator. After the first appointment I also saw the dietician and psychologist. The decision to have the surgery was the best one I’ve ever made. Dr. Burhop was absolutely wonderful.

Today, my kids feel like they have a really good daddy. I play baseball and coach my son’s football team. I can play with my 5-year-old daughter and not get worn out. I feel super lucky. I have a whole new and long life ahead of me and I intend to enjoy every minute.
